Have you ever been stuck in the middle of a frozen forest, with night falling, and no idea what direction to go?

Nope. Didn't think so.

Well, my story starts in the middle of nowhere, with only a pair of baggy ski pants and a dingy snowboard to keep me company.

"I'm going to kill you when we get out of here."

Oh, and there was my idiot friend, Andy.

"Bryan, how many times do I have to tell you this isn't my fault?"

"Explain to me how this isn't your fault when you are the one who got the brilliant idea to ride off the trail?"

The prospect of imminent death was oddly exhilarating.

Four hundred feet from the ground and counting, she definitely had a death wish. No harnesses to break her fall- no ropes to catch her tumble.

She loved it.

Tyla was a die-hard rock climber. No mountain peak or jagged cliff could intimidate her. Rough callouses printed stories on the palms of her hands, telling tales of epic falls, broken bones, and glorious victories. They also served as extra protection against the sharp stones that threatened to break her skin as she trekked higher.

It was the season of death.

But was it, really? She didn't think so. Sure, it was cold. And yes, there wasn't as much food. But everybody else missed the point.

Every year, the earth was reborn. It was stripped of all life that was unable to survive the biting cold. All life that couldn't live long enough to see one more awe-inspiring winter. That in itself was the signal- it was time that this being stopped struggling and found peace. The end of one life, the start of another.

The twittering notes rose higher in the birds' throats, as if in excitement. Somebody was singing with them? Why, this was an unexpected surprise. More notes danced through the trees, and Tasha continued to walk down the leaf-littered forest, her head held high and eyes shining with anticipation.

"Who are you?"

Tasha continued to make lyrics from the simple notes, transforming them into a little melody.

Soft sunshine broke through the treetops in a splotchy pattern, highlighting each branch and leaf in a crisp edge. The sun was rising- still in its earl

Slender muzzle was pointed upwards, deep, forest-green eyes pleadingly gazing up at the canopy. Why couldn't it just fall? She wanted it so badly. A gift, a souvenir, a symbol. It was different, like her. It could see the pristine beauty of the earth, just like she. Yet it still refused to fall.

A full blockade of autumn leaves was stationed above her tiny figure. Delicate leaves, agitated by the breeze, twirled on their stems. All were varying shades of jade green, pumpkin orange, or cherry red. All were of the same kin, that of the towering maple tree.
Yet one of them was unique.
